“Click eat”, dolls!

They (2 of Restopolis founders, aka Andrea Rossi and Almir Ambeskovic) didn’t know I have a sweet tooth for dolls when they sent me this greetings card. So I had to re-post it here asap, because I love when non collectors meet and choose dolls. Milan-based Restopolis in on the digital scene since this year with a platform for users to search and book their restaurant, then to comment and share their experience - “Click eat!” to summarize. And such platform is as “scalable” as this pandoro cake for a group of foodie dolls, I suppose. Prosit 2012!

Prosit 2012!

A star a doll, a doll a wish

Xmas 2011 and new Year 2012: my season's greetings calligram, in Latin, made using text characters only. Well, the image is not featuring dolls but the title can help getting an interpretation for each star, for those very picky with consistency in blogging and blog theme.

I have just planted a tree

I've just been told a tree will be planted in my name. This infographic image (Italian text only, sorry, but intuitive) tells how the CO2 produced by a blog can be neutralized by planting a new tree - "plant" this msg in yr friends' pages!

Dollcultural, and CO2 neutral

Use your blog to plant a tree, and tell your friends! A tree can neutralize yr blog’s carbon print. I found this beautiful image of a Momoko doll metamorphosized into a tree to attract as many as possible dollcultural readers and urge them to act now. This is an idea by Dove Conviene in collaboration with I plant a tree. And here’s what to do: 1) Post on your blog about this project and say your blog is CO2 neutral. 2) choose a widget, and embed it in a well visible position on your blog 3) write to co2neutral@doveconviene.it with your post’s link 4) a tree will be planted to neutralize your blog’s carbon print.
Here’s why a blog = a tree: according to dr. Alexander Wissner-Gross, environmental activist and physicist in Harvard, a website produces an average of g 0,02 of CO2 for each visit. Assuming 15.000 page views per month, this makes a total of kg 3,6 of CO2 p.a., and this is mainly due to the servers. How much CO2 can a tree absorb? Well, this depends on many factors, however the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) calculates that a tree can absorb an average of kg 10 of CO2 p.a. – let’s conservatively say Kg 5 per tree per year. Well, one tree will ensure your blog 50 years of zero impact. So pls, ACT NOW.
*

Weredolls and other rencontres

Merry-go-round faces, weredolls and wererabbits, celebrities in the dark, confusing landscapes. These are Carlo Golia’s photos, which I discovered at step 09. What do they have to do with dolls? They are an extremization, a gigantic doll-parody. If you take and make a glittered Barbie bigger and older, you’ll obtain someone who’s perfect for a Luna Park. It you take the tender toy-rabbit and cut off his right ear, you’ll obtain kinda lysergic monster. If you subtract a dazed Elvis figurine the smoothness of the vinyl, he’ll be kinda lifeless shell singing at night. A deformed and parallele hyperreality is in ambush for us in these images. Let’s be careful next time we play.

A doll in a Garage

oh, a bit of creepy beauty. While the most meringued doll-related events were taking place during the last 2 Sundays and l couldn’t be there, I happened to collect non-meringued dollcultural material for future meditation. This is one – one of 3 covers deviced to launch Garage, influencer Dasha Zhukova’s art magazine. And I’m not meaning the much talked about peel-off butterfly version; my favourite cover, the one I chose, is instead this kinda OOAK roombox and in it, a doll in the likeness of the British model Lily Donaldson (other than a Monster High creature, sorry). The scene could well recall a Victorian doll house, but seen through the lenses of a more comtemporary gloomy aesthetics. This is actually a Nick Knight + Dinos Chapman image set and creation.
I’m still very interested in those dollcultural installations and OOAK artifacts increasingly invading the territory of art collecting, whereas the meringue genre will take dust on toyshop shelves or at an ordinary doll colletors convention.

Other meringues? WAKE UP!

Magnificent meringuemorphic head on a dollymorphic and very dollcultural moka by Vanni Cuoghi for The White Gallery, Milan. Pls notice those monumental ears on top of the powdered beehive. This work is part of a collective and thematic series of 63 OOAK moka machines modified by 61 artists. The project has been exhibited under the name "WAKE UP!" and it's a touching hommage to the city of Naples, to the coffee culture and to an Italian design icon as the little Bialetti moka.

Barbie hair chandelier

When the kitsch goes up, up, up, it may even reach the ceiling - ceiling from which a chandelier is suspended, made with ash-blonde Barbie hair skeins: not luminous filaments, but heads and heads of Barbie hair.

Sorry, I don't know the author of this work, but will gladly edit this post if someone tells me something more.

Wired dolls

Benedetta Mori Ubaldini is a peculiar scultor, as she creates with balloons and wire – the very kind of wire-net you would use in the countryside to protect your rabbits or chickens. She folds and curves and paints the material to obtain smaller or bigger animals and little or bigger figurines – some of them really dollylike, and they all share an extraordinary lightness and transparency. So they are present and absent wherever you put them. Also when the story is a bit disquieting as in this “rats and babies” installation.
*

Analytic anatomy

This is a cha-hakobi doll – a small automaton serving tea - in pieces though, kinda ready for an anatomy table, from the KARAKURI exhibition now on display in Turin. I don’t know why, more than by the all-dressed automaton dolls, I was moved by the naked parts, with their smooth wood essences, their elegant structure, their essential design, their gentle harmony. And we also are talking about antiquities, dating back to the Edo era (1603-1868), yet somehow anticipating the “friendly robot” philosophy in contemporary Japan.

The topos of black

Vintage trio. Mourning trio? I don’t know, although this black dress code could mean anything. It’s the topos of black. However, the three (dolls) are silent, don’t ask questions and look more respectful than most of the fashion-noisy and socialite-skueaky images out there.
*
Trio vintage. Trio in lutto?

Curvy & sweet (tooth)

My explorations around and about the body of the dolls continue. Curvy beauty is interestingly and interestedly coming back in the real world; so, you dolls, be prepared! And if Barbie has a few curves without being curvy, we notice that truly curvy and widely successful dolls don’t exist yet - Bambola is still too much a niche idol at the moment. In the meanwhile, I spotted these marzipan minidolls for those with the curvy obsession and a sweet tooth.
*

Memo for memyd

Memyd aka Me 'n my Dolls aka Mauro Marchetti, is now on etsy. One of the most reluctant and most talented doll artists I ever met in my life, therefore a myth for many collectors, Mauro doesn’t love starring here and there or selfpromoting by liking himself on facebook or so. Absent, and yet famous. Hidden, and yet followed. A rare mix. For him do speak his OOAK dressed dolls, all about vintage and MOD revisited with culture, and the stunning totally handmade miniature series reproducing Barbie and her friends, featured in a very reduced scale with outfits and giftsets. His prices are surprisingly honest, which is consistent with his rigorous personality. Listen to this memo, take a look at his etsy page and don’t miss your favourite piece!

Memyd alias Me ‘n my Dolls alias Mauro Marchetti, adesso è su etsy.

Save the date, you lucky ones dropping by Paris and don’t miss:

Des jouets et des hommes
Paris, Grand Palais, Galeries nationales
September 14, 2011 – January 23, 2012

From the official presentation:
“A thousand toys from Antiquity to the present day, all in one exhibition! Nothing of such scope has ever been attempted before: antique dolls, royal dolls, Barbie dolls, trains, planes, boats, bears of all sorts, astonishingly lifelike clockwork toys, warlike videogames, lead soldiers and plastic figurines, flying saucers, Noah’s arks and even Father Christmas in an aeroplane.”
So now I wonder: Is this a sign of attention to the toycultural aspects of life we could ever expect to see in an Italian museum? I don’t know. We have thematic museums as the one in Angera all about dolls. Or we have private collections more or less temporarily exhibited to a public audience. I think however that the doll and toys collectors’ community could also be more focused on sharing culture, i.o. simply meeting for selling and networking… and I know I’m not alone with this sentiment.
*

Parigi, Grand Palais, Galeries nationales
14 settembre 2011 – 23 gennaio 2012

Hanging and waiting

A dress form is not the dress nor the person nor a body. It can be, however, a way to evoke the three of them. So you don’t know which doll dress will fit which doll, but you can see a doll body, sewn in its details, sculpted to portray without being a portrait, curvy and sexy and ever softer than the real doll’s. A dress form is in fact kinda patient placeholder, an incomplete secret between you and the couturier, an excuse to accept and love other forms of incompleteness as well.
*

BAD (on) FOOD

When a normal birthday cake is no longer enough, when a sexy bunnygirl in the cake is too early, a winged Barbie fairy head and torso on a hyperdecorated meringuish lilac-frosted cake can make a sweet surprise. Or maybe not. The cake has been sliced and Barbie’s dissected gown reveals layers of creamy stuffing. Yes, but where is everybody? This excessive, solitary, already sliced cake gives me a feeling like of wasted food where food is an issue for millions. This is my contribution to Blog Action Day 2011 on FOOD. Much more here.

Cultural collision

CRASH! A tiny South Korean building, somehow parachuted from the sky, has smashed into a 19th century American mansion, filling a ground-floor room with debris. And all of us are shocked viewers of this collision. Not a real collision, but rather a doll-scaled hyperdetailed cultural one, named “Fallen Star 1/5”, by Korean artist Do Ho Suh, now exhibiting at Los Angeles LACMA. We might take this like a metaphor of immigration, with the artist saying: "It's my personal journey from Korea to the U.S. and the story of the house that came along with me, or brought me here." The house itself, and its photosensitive resin prototypes are both breathtaking.

CRASH!

Eternal doll

Burnt, sliced, pierced, tortured, whirred, massacred and detested, Barbie resurrects all the time. And you know why? Yes you know why: because she’s anything and because this statement will always reset to zero any accusation or flame. Here’s one of my slides presented to an audience of NON doll collectors last Friday, under the purposedly created logo and title of “Barbie odiosamata doll”, wich means “Barbie hated-loved doll”. Wiew the whole presentation here (ITA only, English to come), or contact me for a free copy.

Bruciata, affettata, torturata, perforata, frullata, massacrata e detestata, Barbie risorge continuamente.

once again, I'm not affiliated or else with Mattel and my interest towards Barbie is purely dollcultural.

Minced meat who?

“Carne trita”, i.e. minced meat, is the title of a brilliant new column on rubgy worldcup written by a friend of mine, Emanuele (in ITA only, sorry). Now, who would dare to call minced meat the so called Dieux du stade, c’est à dire, all those rubgysts attenting to the hormonal balance of men and women from their calendar and web pages? As built and athletic as action figures, I think the’re well aware of being kinda adult male dolls for adults.

Another pearl

This is Jan Vermeer's masterpiece as seen by Jocelyne Grivaud, who loves playing famous paintings and works in Barbie version. In my case, it goes to make a wonderful addition to the "Girl with the pearl earring" dollcultural thread featured in this blog (pls verify by typing "pearl earring" in the search field on top left corner of this page)... Enjoy!

Buon divertimento!

Think while you sink

Not a tropical fish. Nor an art installation. This drifting hollow plastic doll torso stands for all the human marks being left around in the form of wasted objects now washed up in our oceans. So I happened to think about our staking mania and doll collecting.“The artist collected the objects, taking them back into the water to make her photographic images. Similarities in the colour and form of the plastic objects and the background in which they are positioned combine to provide curious and fascinating visual material.”Despite the kinda suspended beauty of these images, the topic is as pressing as environmental pollution, thus requiring our involvement. Will biodegradable dolls exist in a near future? Or are they a paradox?

Well rounded

Bowl-shaped haircut for two - often in the past really made putting a bowl on the kid's head and then cutting hair all around the bowl's edge. Don't know which kind of doll-dimensioned bowl this OOAKer used, but I love the result: something fresh and nice and clean and natural looking, not at all diva-like. Models: Barbie doll, Momoko doll. Mhhh... just the style my wavy hair will never accept.

Boudoir fortune?

A true “boudoir doll” knows secrets; her owner’s bedroom secrets. To my surprise, when I recently revisited the doll museum in Angera - Museo della Bambola - at Rocca Borromeo (Maggiore Lake), I discovered a few mischievous boudoir dolls in the collections. Then, back home, I searched and found images like the one featured above, which is about “the doll’s fortune” - a quite cynical, discouraging suggestion. No irony, IMO. The other one is an allegedly liberated smoking Lenci doll, instead.

Nessuna ironia, secondo me. L’altra invece è una bambola Lenci fumatrice, in teoria una emancipata.

Available VS disposable

For doll lovers or foot fetishists: clean up your ears graciously with this Japanese doll's pointy feet. The naked and sexy dolls, dating back to the 70s, come in a couple like our ears. However, what impresses me most of all here, is the change in our habits and in the concept of hygiene: we are comparing an artistic and always available vintage earpick for repeated use VS our disposable contemporary cotton fioc. This available VS disposable issue recalls me the precious toothpick pendant noticed in an Renaissance painting by Lorenzo Lotto (portrait of Lucina Brembati). Such personal accessories were as rare as jewels, an excuse for showing-off and a sign of exquisite politeness and savoir-vivre.

b-sided, multifaceted B.

Barbie’s new spot, featuring a red carpet scene and intended to emphasizing the “cool factor” ot the doll, is an actual epitome of all expected celebrity life ingredients. Including an obvious “B-side” walk (Pippa factor). I’m therefore waiting for the humorous and playful development of the message after reading how Jenny Watson, Senior Marketing Manager at Mattel, explains: “This campaign was designed to communicate Barbie’s appeal and popularity to girls and mums in a new way. The Barbie brand is fashionable and credible but also humorous and playful. The new campaign brings to life all elements of the brand to remind people of Barbie’s status as a fashion icon.” I’d like to see some other status anyway. BTW, in the creative team a proud bit of Italy, with Magia2000’s Mario Paglino styling the doll for the shooting. Let’s wait and see.

Aspettiamo, vedremo.

Vacuum at hand

Doll arms and doll hands, yes. But not healthy and rosy, just dusty and empty, somehow vacuum treated without being cleaned; they look like gloves or body parts, alluding to stacks of corpses?

Multiplied diva

I’m not even sure, but I tend to say these are dolls – Barbies, in case - displayed in a kinda colourful mise en abîme, which is multiplying the same pose in chromatic variations. Serial divas? How can you be a diva if you are serial? This image by Dietmar Spolert seems to genially capture such ambiguity.

Waiting for MeringONE 08

An amazing doll pyramid. Dolls like creamy profiteroles. Dolls looking a bit gelatinous. Dolls with something old-fashioned and something else hyper-cyber-futuristic. Dolls in a frozen choreographic pose, maybe reusable as a memorable centerpiece. Ask the author whether they are Barbies or not, or be carelessly directly inspired.

Una sbalorditiva piramide di bambole. Bambole come cremosi profiteroles.

Persisting Princesses

Cinderella, Aurora, Pocahontas, Belle, Tiana… We know them from Disney movies and even before (for some of them, at least) from the most famous fairytales. We played with them as dolls**. We now meet them on imaginary Vogue covers thru Dante Tyler’s artwork. Interesting - why? Because the princess myth is persisting. Because a fictional character or a toy or a fashion icon or an instant celebrity share many mechanisms of image building, visual and gesture and attitude communication.

** the sentence is generic and a bit rhetorical, as I’m not so interested in princesses nor did I play with such dolls, anyway...
