White & whites

This is one of the cleanest and sincerely brightest pics entered in the dollcultural photocontest I quoted a few weeks ago. I was among the judges, and always voted the entries without knowing the authors’ names. Look at this tidy Blythe echoing an ad of the 60s. Now I know it’s by Emma, I’m sure her concepts impress me independently and anyway.

Re-real

Reborn, or never born? These over-real dolls are emotionally misplacing me. A fortiori, because they are typically made in 1:1 scale, and even stuffed to have a real, likely weight. This is a superb example by an Italian creator, Maria Gabriella Poggio, mother of six and with various nieces.
*

Crying dolls

The symbolic power of dolls. Before the Court, in Austria, demonstrating against J. Fritzl, who abused her daughter for 24 years and had 7 children from her – while he lived with his unaware wife upstairs in the same detached house.

Delighting détour

When dolls are hyper-real and reality is hyper-dollish, I love finding détours like this pic by my collector friend Emma, who equipped a strange 70s doll called Susie sad eyes with oversized arms borrowed from another doll as if they were gloves – the effect delights me.

Inphallicble!

Ok, this is vaguely anthropomorphic. A part for the whole. A crocheted puppet. An inphallicbly identifiable
(insert your favourite nickname). And at the same time, a work by Marianne Batlle, who bejewels a playful virility with her creative touch and considers these works “dolls”.

A Pediophobic Post

This curious and waxy bicephalous dollie (dollie? brrr) seen by moviem@tica at www.crimshop.it in Turin, is a good excuse to touch a complementary topic in a blog about dolls, i.e. pediophobia. Pediophobia is the fear of dolls. A persisting, anomalous, groundless fear of dolls, as if the doll could really be a scary thing, or a sentient being, or a personification of evil. Which is probably not, but we must treat the issue respectully.

Precarious collecting

From the very first time, his works upset me. Mark Ryden, first only blankanvas to me, has the power to dig up monsters from one’s inconscious, and present them under the pastel-coloured appearance of something hagiographic or ex-voto-like. So he easily paints little girls, little pets, toys and all lovely things horribly endangered, or already obeying a sad destiny. This one you see (found by moviem@tica) also features a #1 Barbie. Its title is “Swap Meet Man” and seems allusive to all sorts of collecting.
*

Friends are mosaic pieces

A. and M. are friends of mine, and I have connected them to each other on the axis Milan-Turin - yes I love connecting people I like. So they went out for a snack (or lunch, don’t know exactly) but I must have been a sort of virtual guest between them, as they took this picture for me: a mosaic wall where you can spot a very grunge Barbie doll intercepting their conversation!

Doo-da-doodle doll!

A pensive Momoko with my dislogram in 18k version. A dislogram is a personal doodle - you draw it when focused on something else, in a sort of automatic creativity. I collected a lot of them. Mine is my logo! To my satisfaction, dislogram/doodles have recently proven to really reinforce attention skills!

Bubble(squared)cut

On Barbie’s birthday, I was unexpectedly given one. She has a giant bubblecut, and she’s the repro of the very doll in red one-piece bathing suit you see in my post below. I mean, I was re-given my 1st Barbie, and this touched me. Interestingly, this series was built with a time-capsule concept in mind: emblematic items, worth being a shared material memory.

Everybody say ‘I love Barbie’

… or maybe not everybody, however this is Barbie’s 50th birthday and it falls today. So this is me, in 1966, with my first Barbie caressing me and I still like this image.

Mouth Open, Teeth Showing

The title of this post is the very title of this oneiric and maybe threatening 162 dolls installation seen by my blogger friend Moviem@tica in Copenhagen last year. What is remarkable to me is that “Mouth Open, Teeth Showing” are typical doll features, considered important in doll identification, description and evaluation; but at the same time they do evoke the body language of aggressivity. I don’t know whether the author, the US artist Zoe Leonard, did intentionally use those terms. But the regular pattern of this installation - like an army I’d say-, its visibility from the distance, and the invitation to walk amidst the dolls (very few visitors did actually perform that), all this made a somehow misplacing and disquieting effect.
*

Symbiosis, or double dream, or resin reflections or…

Found a promocard featuring this smooth symbiosis of dolls. Resin dolls? Which dolls? Searched more info. Obtained. It’s a work by Beatrice Morabito titled Fake Mirror Duo. Now I’ll visit this exhibition, which is a collective one, gathering 20 women artists and all about women and the 5 continents of pleasure. And you are invited too. This is where and when:

Donne & Eros
A project by Max Papeschi curated by Grace Zanotto
Galleria Famiglia Margini via Sciesa 9, Milano.
Free entrance. http://www.famigliamargini.com/

(Collectors friends confirmed these are Sybarite dolls. To me it was quite irrelevant, seen the beauty of this image, but sourcing a subject is a good practice)
